Research and development of technologies and products for the broadband and ubiquitous services which people can enjoy safe and rewarding lives
The Cyber Communications Laboratory Group is engaged in research and development in five core competencies to realize the broadband and ubiquitous society which people can enjoy safe and rewarding lives— “visual media”, “speech, acoustics and natural language”, “human interaction”, “human appliance”, and “media computing” —as well as in “open source software (OSS)” to support these competencies. Its main activities are as follows.
[ Visual Media ]
We are moving forward with R&D to realize natural and easy-to-understand communication and media distribution services over broadband networks. These services will be made possible using technologies that input, compress, process, and express superior highly realistic images.
[ Speech, Acoustics and Natural Language ]
For diffusion of broadband and ubiquitous services, we are developing speech-, acoustic-, and language-processing technologies, aiming to further improve high-quality telecommunication and intelligent man-machine interactions.
[ Human Interaction/Human Appliance ]
As society ages and preferences diversify, demand for clever appliances that are easy to operate is growing. Given this trend, R&D in this area is pursuing technology to improve service convenience—beginning with functions that support daily living—in order to increase the user base for broadband services and expand the range of situations in which services are used.
[ Media Computing ]
We are developing next-generation navigation technologies that will generate new communication models, such as information retrieval that will lay the foundation for next-generation portals. We are also producing technologies within broadband services that will create new lifestyles.
[ Open Source Software (OSS) ]
We are developing technologies that aim to expand OSS-applicable bands, such as virtualization of system resources, as well as integrated management technologies for multipurpose utilization of life-logs and spatio-temporal information. These moves are part of our effort to actualize information-based services.
[ BLOGRANGER TG: Blog Search System that Visualizes Using a Topographical Map ]
(BLOGRANGER TG analyzes blog articles and automatically assigns metadata “tags” that indicate blog content. It then automatically creates a virtual “topographical map” based on association. It is an up-to-date visualization of the blogosphere in its entirety.)
[ ITU-T G.711 Wideband Extension: New Global Speech Coding Standard ]
(Scalable speech coding technology that enables 7-kHz-band high-quality speech communication over IP, under maintaining an inter-operability to conventional narrow-band telephones. )
