NTT HOME > NTT Facts > Message from the President
The information and communications industry has experienced swift changes in recent years as seen in the rapid advances in broadband and ubiquitous communications and the accelerated convergence of services, such as fixed-line telecommunications with mobile phones and telecommunications with broadcasting, some of which have created new business models.
Given these whirlwind changes in information and communications, the NTT Group endeavors to establish the broadband infrastructure for the "FLET'S Hikari" optical access services and the FOMA(Freedom of Mobile Multimedia Access)third-generation mobile phone services. The FLET'S Hikari has extended its applications into diverse fields such as IP(Internet Protocol)telephone, video distribution, games, security and healthcare, in addition to the primary application of Internet connectivity lines. The number of subscriptions exceeded 10 million as of the end of September 2008. The Next-Generation Network(NGN), which is the NTT Group's world pioneering social infrastructure project, started commercial services in March 2008. Meanwhile, with the popularized use of FOMA mobile phones, the applicable fields have expanded to include diversified content, mobile credit and global communications due to the introduction of a new business model, improved networking quality and the enhanced mobile terminal lineup. Such enhanced use has resulted in almost 90% of NTT DOCOMO's nearly 54 million subscribers using FOMA-based mobile phones.
As the broadband infrastructure is further progressed, the NTT Group is determined to steadily provide a variety of services from the customer-first perspective, based on the "Road to Service Creation Business Group," a new Medium-Term Management Strategy that was announced in May 2008. The Group will not only work steadily to ensure safe and secure infrastructures for fixed-line and mobile communications services but also promote creating new services in collaboration with application providers and other partners at the Next-Generation Services Joint-Development Forum and other activities. Furthermore, targeting the fiscal year ended March 31, 2011, the NTT Group intends to accelerate the development of the next-generation IP network for fixed-line and mobile phones and then promote broadband and ubiquitous services through the convergence of these services. At the same time, the Group will migrate reforms of the business structure from the existing fixed-line and others to IP and the Solution & New business.
With these initiatives in action toward the Road to Service Creation Business Group, the NTT Group intends to reinforce its competitive edge and increase corporate value. The NTT Group also intends to contribute to improving Japan's economic development and growth, as well as resolving social problems that Japan currently faces such as the aging population combined with a dwindling birthrate, environmental conservation issues, disaster-proof measures and the reinforcement of nursing care and medical care.
In this profile, we provide a thorough overview of our management strategies and business activities, and we hope that it will deepen your understanding and appreciation of the NTT Group.
