Overview of the Environmental Impact of the Business Activities of the NTT Group

At the NTT Group, we believe that the basis of environmental management is to ascertain the environmental impact not only at the development of business activities, but also in each process of them. We are committed to monitoring and reducing the environmental impact on society of each process, from procurement, to distribution, to operations and provision of products and services.

Overview of the Environmental Impact of the Business Activities of the NTT Group

Principle Activity Targets for the NTT Group (by 2010) and Level of Achievement in FY 2004

Prevention of global warming

Reduce CO2 emissions to no greater than 1990 levels.

Performance in FY 2004: 3,190,000 tons*1(target: 1,690,000 tons)
CO2 emissions have increased due to increase of power use.

Energy saved and comsumed through use of IT (Estimated by NTT)

Energy reduction*2:1.4%
Energy consumption*2:0.9%
Due to widespread IT, the amount of energy reduction has become 1.5 times that of energy consumption.

Waste management

Reduce amount of waste to no more than 15% of 1990 levels.

Performance in FY 2004: 57,000 tons (target: 72,000 tons)
Cleared the target for the first time 6 years ahead of the plan.

Paper resource management Reduce amount of virgin pulp used to no more than 80% of 1990 levels.
Performance in FY 2004: 33,000 tons (target: 84,000 tons)
We have achieved this target for five straight years.
