Environmental Communication - The NTT Group Environmental Activities by Theme

Encouraging Communication with Our Stakeholders through Environmental Protection Activities.

Encouraging Dialog

The NTT Group conducts a wide range of activities in order to encourage a dialog with its stakeholders on its environmental-protection activities, including reports, the Internet, advertisements, and exhibits at events.

Activity Topics

Promoting a Wide Range of Active and Continuing Environmental Communication

Newspaper Advertisement Promotes the Role of IT in Reducing Environmental ImpactNewspaper Advertisement Promotes the Role of IT in Reducing Environmental Impact

Since fiscal 1999, the NTT Group has created and published the Environmental Protection Activity Report in order to gain understanding of the environmental activities of the group as a whole. Starting in fiscal 2005, this will change to the CSR Report that includes the NTT Group's environmental activities as well as the social and economic activities.

We also actively place environmental advertisements in newspapers, magazines, and other publications. In fiscal 2004, the NTT Group ran four newspaper advertisements and two magazine advertisements.

We also feel that it is vital to hold exhibits at environmental expositions nationwide, as one part of our efforts to encourage communication about the environment. In fiscal 2004, we exhibited at New Environmental Exposition 2004 Tokyo, Enviro-Shiga 2004, and other events.

We will continue to actively communicate about the environment, in order to deepen our mutual understanding with our stakeholders.

Our Dialog with Our Stakeholders is Growing Even More Active(Active Use of Web Site and Other Means)

The reason we aim to hold an active dialog with our stakeholders through environmental communication is that in addition to promoting understanding of the NTT Group, it also helps to increase the awareness of environmental protection by the NTT Group employees.

In awareness of this, we are involved in a number of activities through environmental pages on our Web sites. In fiscal 2004, we began an "NTT Group emplayees talk about the enviroment (Visiting Version)" Web site. The forum is visited by experts in a wide range of fields - not just the environment - and the NTT Group employees from various fields are able to discuss the environment, based on that person's work and experiences. The NTT Group is committed to incorporating the views and thoughts of these experts into our environmental activities.

We also have other commitments apart from our Web sites. We are committed to encouraging communication using Environmental Protection Activities by the NTT Group: What IT Can Do for the Earth, a video showcasing the NTT Group's environmental activities, as well as other media. These videos are also used in our new-hire training and in employee seminars. On the other hand, we continuously hold workshops for environmental leaders nationwide. We held four workshops in fiscal 2004, attended by 271 employees.

Protecting and Growing Greenery at DoCoMo Woods

Volunteers Help to Create DoCoMo WoodsVolunteers Help to Create DoCoMo Woods

The NTT DoCoMo Group is raising the awareness of its employees toward volunteering and the environment, while increasing communication with people around the world, through activities to protect and nurture forests.

Since 1999, the Group has been committed to creating DoCoMo Woods. DoCoMo Woods are created using the Corporate Forest program of Japan's Forestry Agency, and the Green Fund of the National Land Afforestation Promotion Organization. The activities include tree planting and clearing by the NTT DoCoMo Group employees together with volunteer foresters, path building and maintenance, and other activities with the aim of conserving a rich ecosystem and beautiful scenery.

Additionally, NTT DoCoMo is supporting a three-year, six-month environmental protection effort for a vital ecosystem area in Indonesia that began in April 2004 through US-based the global environmental NGO Conservation International. Located in the north of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, the project jointly plants trees with the local community with the aim of sustainable land use, and provides education and other support in order to improve agricultural and harvest management technologies. The program has expanded the natural habitat area by linking protected forest areas in the region.

As of March 2005, there are 26 DoCoMo Woods, including Indonesia, with a total area of about 82ha. In the future, the program will be accelerated with an eye toward preventing global warming. By the end of phase 1 of the Kyoto Protocol in 2012, it is expected that the forests will spread to each of Japan's 47 prefectures, covering a combined area of about 160ha, and absorbing a total of more than about 6,000 tons of CO2.

NTT DATA Joins WWF's Cool the Earth Campaign

NTT DATA and NTT Data Institute of Management Consulting have teamed up with WWF Japan in its Cool the Earth Campaign aimed at preventing global warming. The Cool the Earth Campaign plans and carries out a wide range of actions with the help of government agencies, corporations, and NGOs, with the aim of rethinking the magnitude global warming will have on the planet, and the responsibilities for it.

NTT DATA and NTT Data Institute of Management Consulting are helping with the campaign's "Climate Witness" project. The purpose of the Climate Witness project is to gather testimony from people around the world whose lives and livelihoods have been threatened by phenomena thought to be due to global warming.

In Japan, however, the direct effects of global warming are still hard to see, and in light of that fact, in Japan the title was changed to "Stories of Global Warming that Hit Close to Home." Participants in the project gather testimonials about global warming from people's daily lives, surroundings, and impressions. NTT DATA's DoblogTM system, a blogging technology that makes it easy for individuals to publish their writings on the Internet, is being used to collect the stories. Testimonials will be collected for a period of about 10 months (from February to November 2005), and will be published at a symposium held in the fall of 2005.

Responses to Questionnaire on the Environmental Protection Activity Report 2004

We received a great deal of comments on the Environmental Protection Activity Report 2004 by the NTT Group, published last fiscal year, through a questionnaire on our Web site and a paper questionnaire. We are grateful to all of you who responded.

Overall, more than 75% of respondents had a favorable opinion of the NTT Group's efforts to protect the environment, while over 85% were positive about the effectiveness of the NTT Group's specific efforts to reduce the environmental impact of IT.

Meanwhile, we received a number of individual comments and suggestions. One respondent wrote that there is not much awareness of the NTT Group's efforts to protect the environment among the public, while another pointed out that more technologies for reducing environmental impact need to be developed. Based on these comments, we plan to continue to communicate with society via our Web site and media, as we have done to date, and conduct research and development leading to reductions to environmental impact, including clean energy and energy-efficient devices. The NTT Group will continue to listen to your comments, and work even harder to protect the environment.
