At the NTT
We are researching a high ultra energy density lithium air battery that can be discharged for a longer time than conventional lithium ion batteries.
The lithium air battery works by reacting oxygen in air on a positive electrode. This novel battery can be repeatedly charged and has much higher energy density(*) than conventional batteries. Once this battery is put into practical use, the operating time for mobile phones, the back-up time for telecommunications facilities and the driving distance of electric vehicles will be dramatically increased.
* Energy density: Energy quantity stored in a battery, expressed as the unit of Wh/kg (battery weight) and Wh/cm3 (battery volume).
Point!
The lithium air battery offers high ultra energy density due to its using oxygen in air. It is one of the promising next generation of batteries for more convenient life.
