Next generation of large-capacity batteries as an alternative to lead acid batteries

Up to now

  • Telecommunications facilities are powered by a large numbers of lead acid batteries during electrical outages. Considerable weight and large volume, the batteries are installed on the ground or first floor of buildings. Lighter and smaller back-up battery systems are therefore eagerly anticipated.

At the NTT

We are developing large-capacity lithium ion batteries and back-up systems that use the batteries. The batteries are lead-free-compact, and light.


Conventionally lead acid batteries are very heavy and large. Very large numbers of lead acid batteries are installed in telecommunications buildings and data centers. The large-capacity lithium ion batteries have a triple the energy density of lead acid batteries. Therefore, they greatly reduce the weight and size of back-up systems. As a result, surplus spaces in buildings become available for other uses.

The large-capacity lithium ion battery back-up system can reduce loading weight and size compared to the lead acid battery system. This new system will enhance the effective utilization of building space.
