NTT East and NTT West Collaborate with Benesse to Create Safe and Comfortable Learning Environments

NTT East, NTT West, and Benesse Corporation reached an agreement on a collaborative project to use the FLET'S Hikari service provided by NTT East and NTT West with the Shinkenzemi Junior High School Course + i (“Plus i”) correspondence course provided by Benesse over the Internet to create safe and comfortable network learning environments for junior high school students. Under this project, NTT East and NTT West will support the creation of safe and comfortable learning environments by providing the Plus i Safe Connection Support Pack to households with concerns about setting up their computers and the Internet environment. The support pack bundles FLET'S Hikari, the Security Countermeasures Service, and a Remote Support Service that enables computer set-up specialists to provide remote support.
Going forward, the respective know-how of each company will be combined and a variety of efforts will be undertaken to create optimal learning environments.

Field Trials Conducted for R&D on Advanced Technologies for Use of Information Appliances

As the ubiquitous broadband environment develops, the use of information appliances at home has been expanding in a variety of ways. In order for the use of information appliances and services for those appliances to spread even further, it is necessary to create environments that enable services tailored to the characteristics and desires of individual users and which can be used simply, safely, and securely.
Under the Research and Development Project on the Advanced Utilization of Information Appliances of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, NTT Com and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation collaborated with testing partners to investigate and evaluate technologies for simplifying information appliance settings and advanced utilization technologies and conducted field trials to evaluate the utility of certain model usage for information appliances.
The two companies presented the results obtained from the field trials at academic conferences and other forums and are encouraging widespread standardization. They will continue to conduct research and development on the safe, secure, and convenient use of Internet services for information appliances and work to generate new value for users of information appliances, propose new lifestyles, and create new business opportunities.

FairCast® - Child Safety Communication Network Wins Good Design Award

The FairCast® - Child Safety Communication Network (“FairCast”) operated by NTT DATA won the 2008 Good Design Award in the new Industry and Society Solution Business and Service Systems category, which was created this year.
The service replaces traditional “phone trees” and uses multiple devices (including e-mail, telephone, and facsimile) to simultaneously contact parents, teachers, local government officials, and others. The service was launched in July 2006 and had about 100,000 households subscribed as of October 2008.
The service won the Good Design Award for enabling concerned and related parties to fairly and efficiently acquire emergency and contact information. This service is a response to the growing problem of children's safety and the notion that communities should look out for children. The service was also cited for its high level of utility achieved through low household user fees.
NTT DATA is working to enhance the reliability of FairCast® as a social infrastructure and to raise customer satisfaction even further. At the same time, NTT DATA is taking various measures to increase usability and reinforce security as well as to bolster center facilities and processing capabilities.

The Flow of FairCast® Communications

The service can be used for ordinary communications such as notices of PTA meetings and the presence of suspicious persons. The service can also issue a warning notice such as an emergency communication about a dangerous situation in the vicinity of a school or an early dismissal, event cancellation or school closing.

* FairCast® is a trademark of NTT DATA Corporation.
