Educational Support Environment Created Using “Kappan” Technology for Linking Printed and Electronic Media

Taking a Picture of Books and Course Materials Using a Tablet or Other Device to Watch Videos of Lectures

NTT West and NTT collaborated with HAMAGAKUEN, a cram school (headquartered in Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture) to conduct trials*1 to provide a new learning environment using “Kappan” technology, which links the content within printed materials to related electronic materials.
HAMAGAKUEN students can use a camera-equipped tablet or other Wi-Fi*2 device to take pictures of the portions of book materials they are interested in, and watch video clips of explanatory lectures automatically retrieved from a server connected to the Internet.*3
NTT West is collaborating with HAMAGAKUEN and will consider the specifications for services to be provided in the future.  NTT West is also promoting the “Ie Deji Concept” (the complete digitalization of the home) for linking various digital devices through networks with the aim of creating new lifestyles and enhancing the use of optical broadband going forward.

  • *2 A brand name certifying interconnectivity among wireless LAN devices by the Wi-Fi Alliance.
  • *3 The use of “Kappan” technology requires an Internet connection service such as FLET’S Hikari, a contract with, and the payment of user fees to, a compatible provider, and a Wi-Fi environment connected to the Internet.

What is Kappan?

Kappan is a technology that can search the location of selected books/texts developed by the NTT Cyber Solutions Laboratories.  The technology searches the location of certain texts to a high degree of precision (e.g., page 100 of Textbook A) by scanning texts vertically for horizontally-read texts (and horizontally for vertically-read texts).  It enables users to retrieve electronic materials (e.g., a video clip which explains the content of a page from a videotaped textbook page) pre-linked to the text by accessing a server connected to the Internet and to view such materials on tablets and other devices.

What is the "Ie Deji Concept"?

The “Ie Deji Concept” seeks to make day-to-day living and data sharing easier, more convenient, and more comfortable by linking all digital devices at home through a network.  It also seeks to enable customers to share and enjoy activities with distant family and friends, and is a general term for complete digitalization of the home.
