Service Integration Laboratories
Overview of the Laboratories
Service Integration Laboratories is responsible for formulating an R&D strategy for providing the basis of next generation information and communication network, and for preparing the necessary environment to bring this to reality.
Specifically, we develop desirable architectures from both network and service perspectives; strategically select and plan R&D topics which adapt to global trends of technology and markets; study communication traffic and quality in the characteristics of these design, control, management and operation in the face of growing varieties of networks and services; and promote cross-laboratory commercialization activities to turn the technologies developed by NTT laboratories into business promptly and certainly.
Greetings
Service Integration Laboratories is tackling on the followings.
(1) Planning strategy of cross-laboratory R&D
(2) Studying network architecture and communication traffic and quality which are the basis of next generation information communication network
(3) Promoting cross-laboratory commercialization development to turn the NTT labs' technologies into business promptly and certainly
To research and develop new services, products or technologies for customers, it is important to select R&D topics with adapting market needs and global trends of technology. To this end, the laboratory is engineering services with understanding the variety of existing technologies developed inside/outside NTT's laboratories.
In the research and development of network architecture, communication traffic and quality, the laboratory contributes to innovative research and global standardization which satisfy variety of needs for the next generation network as common platforms.
Other cross-laboratory activities are planning business solution, studying development process technologies, and value-added commercialization combined by various technologies. These are collaborations of NTT group companies to commercialize the technologies in more efficient way.
At Service Integration Laboratories, the researchers who have variety of specialties are carrying out wide range of R&D activities, such as strategy planning, basic researches and commercialization.

| Next-generation network architecture | Communication Traffic and Quality |
(1) Technologies and solution development to promote ICT for public services
We aim to apply information and communication technology (ICT) to public services such as electronic government and medical services, and offer technologies, for example, the authentication of secure devices, control of user IDs, and access control to individual information. We develop products and integrate them with technologies of other laboratories or products on the market. In addition, we research mental health caring aiming at the future business.

(2) Next-generation network architecture
We are studying network models and methods of introduction appropriate for the construction of a safe, secure and convenient next-generation network (NGN) equipped with the advantages of both the existing fixed-line telephone network and an IP network. In addition, in order to ensure global compatibility, we are participating enthusiastically in activities in the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and other standardization organizations, to ensure our NGN is open enough to permit interconnectivity with other carriers and ISPs.

(3) Communication Traffic and Quality
Super-high-performance network testbed: GEMnet2
In order to realize comfortable broadband and ubiquitous services over economical and reliable telecommunication networks, communication traffic and quality technologies that aim total network optimization considering the balance of "network economics and quality of service" are key factors. We are investigating methodologies to economically design and operate telecommunication networks that meet the quality of service by utilizing both traffic/network/quality technologies cultivated in our project for long years and state of the arts information technologies.
