Realizing a Low Carbon FutureThe NTT Group promotes the process of adaptation to climate change.

How do we adapt to climate change?

One of the key climate change objectives is to reduce CO2 emissions (this is called mitigation).

But even if we cut our CO2 emissions right now, climate change is already occurring as a result of past emissions, and this has been manifested in a variety of environmental challenges.

We need to adapt to the many and varied impacts of climate change through a range of strategies collectively known as adaptation.

These can be as simple yet important as providing adequate water supplies during heat waves to reduce the incidence of heatstroke; raising the height of embankments and levees to prevent damage from increasingly strong typhoons and high tide events; and producing hazard maps to educate people about evacuation routes in their local area.

In the agricultural sector, we can design improved species to cope better with changes in climatic conditions.

In the health sector, we can develop new strategies for infectious diseases.

What is required is a two-pronged approach of Mitigation and Adaptation: reducing CO2 emissions, while at the same time taking action to adapt to the impacts of climate change.

At the NTT Group, we are actively working on both mitigation and adaptation strategies.

Mitigation and adaptation strategies

[Mitigation]Reducing CO2 emissions

Typical reduction strategies include turning off the lights when not needed, using energy-saving products and features, installing renewable energy systems, and switching to low-emission vehicles.

[Adaptation]Being prepared for the impacts of climate change

Typical adaptation strategies include building higher levees to protect against flood and tidal events, developing public health strategies for heatstroke and infectious diseases, designing more robust crop varieties, and actively intervening to conserve ecosystems.

NTT Group strategy on climate change adaptation

The NTT Group helps to adapt to the impacts of climate change in many ways, for instance, by supplying the most advanced ICT services and technologies., researching strategies to adapt to climate change, encouraging employees to get involved in local environmental programs, and actively promoting awareness of our environmental work both within and outside the organization.

The NTT Group also works closely with all stakeholder groups, including employees, clients and suppliers, in working to adapt to climate change.

Adaptation strategies at the NTT Group

Every person involved in the work of the NTT Group is working to prepare for concentrated rainfall and flooding, rising sea levels and high tide events, disruption to vital infrastructure, heatstroke, food and water shortages and loss of ecosystems through a range of measures such as supplying the latest technology and telecommunications services and mobilizing employees.

Contribution of the NTT Group

One of the most visible impacts of climate change is the rising incidence of natural disasters such as higher atmospheric temperatures, flooding and landslides.

The NTT Group is committed to helping to address the effects of natural disasters.

For instance, we are developing more resilient communication networks that are able to remain operational during a disaster, as well as mobile ICT vans that provide communication capability on the ground in an emergency.

In addition to providing communication capability (primarily voice and data), it is also important to gather information about disaster-affected areas to ensure that people receive the services they need.

In this way, the NTT Group is working on emergency response measures in line with adaptation strategies.

Developing disaster-resilient telecommunications networks and equipment

The NTT Group is striving to develop disaster-resilient telecommunications networks and equipment. These measures are aimed at mitigating the effects of disasters, and we will also continue providing communications services in the event of a disaster, while serving as an example of adaptation to disasters caused by climate change.

Mobile ICT unit

We provide mobile boxes and automobiles equipped with communications, information processing and storage functions to enable the swift recovery of communication functions in areas affected by a disaster. We also offer functions for collecting data on the people affected. These services are disaster prevention measures and adaptation to disasters caused by climate change.
