Terminology

Secure control
Functions using encryption and other technologies to manage information, enabling digital content to be distributed securely in accord with the conditions determined for its use by the content holder, etc.

Throughput
A term indicating the amount of data that can be transferred in a given length of time. If throughput drops on a part of the network causing bottlenecks, content cannot be transferred smoothly end-to-end.

CDN (Content Delivery Network)
A network in which multiple mirror servers and storage servers are deployed for efficient content distribution.

Marketplace
A venue provided with the necessary functions and operated for efficient exchange of goods and information.

HGW (Home Gateway)
Equipment that connects the home to a broadband network, enabling content to be enjoyed on a TV set as well as providing storage functions and interactive service functions.

Revenue sharing
A business model by which the revenue from customers is divided among multiple business partners providing services, according to a predetermined ratio.

Portal
The initial Web site visited by customers. It presents customers with a diverse range of content, using search functions, navigation functions, communication functions and various other functions.

Content navigation
Functions for proposing optimum content to customers based on the particular attributes of each customer, selecting from the many choices available by key word, index, attribute, access ranking, etc.

On-demand streaming
Delivery of voice and video data, etc., to the customer each time the customer makes a request to a content distributor, with playback the content while they are being received from the network, normally without being stored permanently at the customer terminal.

On-demand download
Delivery of voice and video data, etc., to the customer each time the customer makes a request to a content distributor, with the content being stored at the customer terminal.

Streaming
Playback of voice and video data while they are being received from the network, normally without being stored permanently at the customer terminal.
