Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) has recently applied with the Telecommunication Authority of Singapore for pre-examination of its qualifications to bid for a new carrier business license which would enable it to provide basic domestic and international telecommunication services from April 2000 through a consortium formed with Singapore Technologies Telemedia (STT), Singapore Power (SP) and British Telecom (BT).NTT and the three other companies formed the consortium last March to prepare for the pre-examination.
The Singapore government is planning to approve a maximum of two companies to become new providers of basic telecommunication services in a market now monopolized by Singapore Telecom. The Telecommunication Authority has stopped accepting applications. After pre-examining all applicants, the authority will announce the companies approved to participate in the final bidding, as well as the official conditions of the bid, on September 1.
