NTT Submits Fiscal 1996 Report on Communications Volume by Telecommunications Services
Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) has submitted its Fiscal 1996 Report on Telecommunications Services and Volumes to the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) and concurrently released the report to the general public. Interested parties may review the report at the NTT headquarters Information Station or at the Interconnection Promotion Office at regional headquarters throughout Japan.Summaries of communications volumes and other statistics for subscriber telephones are presented in the attachments to this press release.

1. Number of calls by distance
The number of calls made by ordinary telephone subscribers in fiscal1996 rose 2.2% over the previous year, while call volume declined 2.7%.
A breakdown by distance shows that both call volume and the number of calls decreased for calls covering distances of 20 - 30km. In all other bands, number of calls increased but call volume declined. Revenue was down 3.1% compared to the previous year. Breakdown by Business and Residence
Business calls accounted for 56.2% of the total number of calls, compared to 58.4% in the previous year. Residence calls surpassed business calls both in terms of call volume and revenue, accounting for 63.1% of total call volume and 56.8% of total revenue, compared to 62.0% and 55.1%, respectively, in the previous year.

In terms of the distribution of calls by duration, 58.4% of all business and residence telephone calls were completed within one minute in fiscal 1996, compared to 56.3% in the previous year, while 75.9% were completed within two minutes, compared to 74.6% the previous year, and 83.4% within three minutes, compared to 82.6% in the previous year.
The average duration of a business call was 102 seconds, compared to 106 seconds in the previous year, while the average residence call lasted 224 seconds, compared to 242 seconds in the previous year. The average length for all calls, both business and residence, was 155 seconds, compared to 163 seconds the previous year.

4. Cross-Boundary Communication
(1) Interprefectural Communication (number of calls)
The number of interprefectural calls increased 1.9% nationwide compared to the previous year. Calls between the prefectures of Tokyo, Aichi, and Osaka showed an increase of 4.3%. (unit:: millions)

The number of inter-MA calls increased 4.7% nationwide compared to the previous year. Calls between the Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka MAs showed an increase of 3.4%. (unit: millions)

3. Communication Use by Prefecture (number of calls)
The proportion of intraprefectural and local communications tends to be higher in Prefectures which are geographically more distant from the major metropolitan areas, and lower for most of the Prefectures in the major metropolitan areas. Nationwide, local communications accounted for 66% of all communications on average (compared to 67% the previous year), while intraprefectural communications accounted for 85% of all communications on average (compared to 85% the previous year).
