NTT, Indonesia PTTelkom to Start Joint Multimedia Service Test

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) will start a multimedia experiment in the city of Bandung, Indonesia, this October using a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network. The test, to be carried out jointly with PTTelkom of Indonesia, aims at development of multimedia services suitable for use in Asia.

NTT signed an agreement for the joint experiment with PTTelkom when PTTelkom President Nasution visited Japan recently.

Through this experiment, to be based on the results of R&D programs cooperatively conducted for the access network by NTT and PTTelkom, the partners will develop Asia-specific multimedia services and an access network for supporting the service.

The planned experiment will provide such multimedia services as CATV, VOD (*1), LOD (live on demand)(*2), LAN connection, distance learning, and ISDN telephone services via a state-of-the-art FTTH network.

The experiment, to be initiated in October, will last about one year, during which NTT and PTTelkom are expected to evaluate network reliability and service quality.
They will also develop multimedia services suited for use in Indonesia and an access network. NTT will dispatch staff to coordinate the experiment and services.

NTT plans to extend the achievements resulting from the experiment to other Asian countries.

Background:
Through joint-use tests of multimedia, NTT has conducted a variety of experiments, technological and service developments using the FTTH network. NTT has also participated in telecommunication projects, chiefly in Asia.

Since 1995, NTT Access Network Systems Laboratories and PTTelkom have conducted joint R&D programs to build up the access network in Indonesia. To this end, the two companies have jointly developed a variety of systems necessary for standardization of the FTTH network.

The experiment is designed to build up the FTTH network and to provide multimedia services based on NTT's FTTH technology combined technologies developed jointly by NTT and PTTelkom.

Outline of the experiment:
1. Venue: The joint experiment will be implemented at PTTelkom's R&D laboratory and in the environs of Bandung, a cultural and academic city of West Java, where PTTelkom has its headquarters.

2. Term of experiment: Approximately one year from October 1997

3. Targets for monitoring: The number of targeted objectives for monitoring will be approximately 30, focusing on PTTelkom executives' homes in the vicinity of PTTelkom.

4. Design and construction of network systems: The experiment facilities will be completed in about 40 days by engineers of NTT and PTTelkom in order to start service in October.

Objectives of the experiment:
Through the experiment, NTT and PTTelkom will jointly develop and introduce the access network and multimedia services suitable for local requirements in Indonesia.

Future developments:
NTT and PTTelkom will establish a de facto standardization for access network systems in Asia. NTT expects to expand its global business operations elsewhere in Asia.

Terminology:
*1: VOD (Video on Demand)
An interactive service giving users access to programs (video pictures, video data) when desired. For the planned experiment, high-resolution MPEG2 video pictures to be accessed on demand will be stored on a server.

*2: LOD (Live on Demand)
A service providing users with high-resolution MPEG2 video pictures. To be used for videoconferencing and corporate news services.
