NTT Applies for License to Establish Type I International Telecommunications Company
Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) has applied today with the Minister of Post and Telecommunications for a license to invest in Type I telecommunications company specializing in international telecommunications services.Traffic in international telecommunications has risen dramatically due to rapid expansion of Internet usage. In response, NTT plans to establish a Type I telecommunications company, meaning that it will own its own circuits, which it will lease to Type II telecommunications operators and corporate users, which do not own circuits, to provide them with international telecommunications services. The new company, which will be established immediately following license approval, will offer a reliable network for high-quality, low-cost international services. Services are expected to start in April 1999. Types of services and areas served will expand according to market needs.
