NTT Hosts Third "NTT World Bird Count"
--- Multimedia Offers New Ways to Enjoy Bird Watching ---
Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) will host the third "NTT World Bird Count" event starting October 1, for a period of one month.Together with Bird Life International (BLI) and the Japan Wild Bird Association, NTT proposes a new way to enjoy bird watching with bird lovers from around the world. During the event, bird lovers will submit to NTT information such as bird sightings, methods and interesting bird anecdotes via fax, telephone and the Internet. NTT will offer the collected information globally in English and Japanese, with plans for Chinese and Spanish in the future, through an Internet website (http://www.wnn.or.jp/wnn-n/w-bird/).
For each bird reported, NTT will give a charitable contribution of ¥1,000 to BLI, which will be used for nature protection projects in the Asian region. During the second NTT World Bird Count, 80,000 people from 81 countries reported 5,317 species that resulted in ¥5,317,000 being donated to charity. Observers sighted more than half of the approximately 9,700 bird species in the world. NTT anticipates that Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan, the Honorary President of BLI, will participate in the third "NTT World Bird Count".
Two other related programs are planned during the event. Children's Wild Bird Conference in Asia, to be held in the middle of October, will connect children in Japan, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia via a multimedia conferencing system called Phoenix, enabling them to jointly learn about nature protection through games and quizzes on wild birds. Also, a World Bird Count Photo Contest will be co-hosted by NTT and Konica Corporation. Entries will be displayed on an Internet website photo gallery jointly created by NTT and Konica.
