NTT Connects Type II Telecommunication Carriers to Toll Switches

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) announced that it will provide telecommunication operators that lease circuits with connection to toll switches, enabling these so-called Type II carriers to provide services similar to those offered by telecommunication operators that own their own circuits (Type I carriers).

Previously, NTT provided only user-network interfaces to Type II carriers.

NTT plans to provide the new interface in October 1998. The corporation is announcing the plan one year before implementation to give the operators plenty of time to prepare for the launch of domestic public-leased-public line connections (deregulated in October 1996) and international public-leased-public line connections (to be deregulated in December).

The interface will provide the following specific benefits:

1. Easy dialing
Previously, a user needed to dial the number of an access point, an ID number and finally the destination number to make a connection. Alternatively, a special adaptor had to be connected to the telephone line to abbreviate this procedure. With the new service, however, only one number will have to be dialed, so connections will be fast, similar to the services of Type I carriers.

2. Competitive interconnection charge
NTT will charge Type I and Type II carriers the same fee for use of its local network.
Public Announcement of Connection Interface The interface was announced publicly on September 24 in kampo (official gazette) entitled "Toll Switch Connection Interface Function for Type II Telecommunication Carriers."

NTT will host a seminar to explain the connection interface as follows:
