NTT Applies for Time Plus
-- Reduced Rates for Local Long Duration Calls --

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) applied on January 20 to the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications for approval of a new reduced-rate service for long duration local calls, called Time Plus.

According to the plan, customers will pay a fixed monthly charge, in return for which the duration of a 10 yen call will be extended from the present three minutes to five minutes (daytime and nighttime). With this new service, NTT will be able to answer user demands for more affordable call rates for the expanding use of personal computer networks and the Internet.

The service, the first of its kind, will be initially limited to the Tokyo metropolitan area and adjacent prefectures. Following research and a trial period, NTT will consider expanding the service nationwide.

Once this service is combined with TeleChoice and TeleWise plans - reduced-rate services for long-distance calls -- subscribers will be able to benefit from lower charges for both local and long-distance calls.
