Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) is pleased to becontributing its telecommunications know-how to the Nagano OlympicWinter Games as a Gold Sponsor, helping to ensure the smooth andsuccessful operation of the Games and, at the same time, studying howto strengthen its operations and regional telecommunicationsinfrastructure, as well as promoting its technology and services on aworldwide stage.

NTT's many contributions to the Nagano Olympic Winter Games include the following:

1. Olympic Telecommunications Network (see attachment 1)

NTT is setting up the Olympic Telecommunications Network to handle the increased communication requirements during the Games. The network consists of optic fiber cables, digital switches, large-capacity transmission equipment and satellite telecommunications lines in the cities of Nagano, Hakuba, Yamanouchi, Nozawa Onsen and Karuizawa. It also comprises systems for voice, video and data transmission, as well as mobile communications.

(1) Voice systems
* Use of PBXs in Olympic locations (20) for interconnection
* Provision of large numbers of temporary public telephones

(2) Video transmission systems
* Television relay lines connected to ORTO '98 and other broadcasting companies.
* CCTV system for television terminals at all Olympic sites.

(3) Data transmission for Information Systems
* Info'98
* Games Results System (and others)

2. New Technology

NTT's R&D laboratories will provide advanced technology:

(1) Watch-size Personal Handy-phone System (PHS)
The world's lightest PHS (mobile phone: 45g, 30cc volume) with voice-recognition for automated dialing. Forty units will be distributed to the NAOC for testing.

(2) "MiMie" compact earphone-typed microphone/receiver unit
A headset that enables voice communication even in extremely noisy surroundings, which can also be connected to a PHS or a mobile phone for hands-free communication. Forty units will be supplied to NAOC.

(3) PHS Multimedia Communication System
Using one PHS channel, color video of up to 1 picture per second can be transmitted simultaneously with voice. Forty units will be supplied to NAOC.

(4) IrDA Public Telephones
This ISDN public telephone with infrared telecommunication interface can be connected to a PC's IrDA port, eliminating the need for a modem or cable, for data communication at 64Kbps (synchronized) or 38.4Kbps (asynchronized). A total of 150 IrDA public telephones (prepaid card type) will be installed primarily in the Main Press Center.

NTT has also helped develop the Nagano City Fullnet System for advanced video on demand.

3. Telecommunication Services during the Nagano Games

NTT will take part in the operation of Telecom Counters to provide information on its telecommunications services, as well as a Network Management Center and Telecom Maintenance Centers to ensure uninterrupted, around-the-clock functioning of the telecommunications network during the Games. At the peak of the Games, NTT and its group companies will dispatch up to 1,200 people per day to the Games to carry out all operations.

4. Volunteer Operations

Since the Olympics depends greatly on volunteers, NTT will dispatch a staff of 90 people to serve as drivers for committee members and athletes during the Games, transporting them to and from the event sites. Also, NTT will cooperate in setting up the LAVONet IN NAGANO, providing a visual telephone system (Phoenix Mini) connected directly to a center staffed with volunteer interpreters to assist foreigners in the streets of Nagano. In addition, NTT, as a Gold Sponsor of the Nagano Games, will help further the Olympic movement through promotions and advertising.

5. Cooperation with NTT group

NTT will cooperate with the NTT DoCoMo Group, NTT Personal Network Group, NTT Facilities and NTT Telecom Engineering Group as part of providing domestic telecommunications services and communication network infrastructure, and assisting in the overall management of the Games.

6. Post-Olympics use of communications facilities After the Games finish, NTT will utilize the communications infrastructure to develop Nagano as an advanced multimedia area.
