StarHub, a consortium comprising Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT), Singapore Technologies Telemedia (STT), Singapore Power (SP) and British Telecom (BT), was awarded today both licenses to provide public basic telecommunication services (domestic and international) and public cellular mobile telephone services from the Telecommunication Authority of Singapore (TAS) NTT is working together with STT, SP and BT towards the launch of the services in April 2000. The TAS selected StarHub on the basis of a tender submission that closed December 31, 1997. Singapore had been planning to allow entry of up to two new operators in both public basic telecommunication services and public cellular mobile telephone services respectively. According to the TAS, as a result of the tender exercise, StarHubs fixed line telephone license was the only one awarded and its cellular license was one of two licenses given out.
