NTT Applies to Launch New Open Computer Network Services

NTT applied for approval from the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications to offer new Open Computer Network (OCN) services for high-traffic connections, overseas roaming, and multiple e-mail addresses. The corporation expects to introduce the services soon after receiving approval. 1. Open Computer Network Services (Type III-Super OCN) NTT will begin offering the Super OCN service for high-volume users of the Internet, such as corporations and universities. The customer will connect directly to the OCN backbone through a digital leased circuit, which will provide a stable, high-quality connection. NTT currently offers continuous-connection (Type I) and dial-up (Type II) services, which have been well received by small and medium-sized corporate customers due to their low costs. Approximately 12,000 subscribers are using these services. With the increased demand for high-volume use of the Internet by corporations, however, as well as growing use of intranets and extranets, many customers now need a continuous, high-quality connection, which prompted NTT to offer the Super OCN (Type III) service. The service will offer 11 levels of capacity: 128kb/s, 192kb/s, 256kb/s, 384kb/s , 512kb/s, 768kb/s, 1Mb/s, 1.5Mb/s, 3Mb/s, 4.5Mb/s, and 6Mb/s. (Please see the attached network diagram.) Access points will be established in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Yokohama and Tachikawa this year, and will expand thereafter based on demand and other conditions. Monthly fee per contract (leased-circuit access charges are separate)

2. Roaming

NTT has also applied to offer a roaming service for users of the OCN Dial-up
Access Service (Type II) to enable them to connect to the access points of
Internet service providers (ISP) overseas while traveling, and thereby avoid
expensive international calls to Japan to connect with the OCN. NTT, by joining
a worldwide Internet roaming alliance managed by U.S.-based Gric Communications,
Inc., will offer some 1,800 access points of 270 ISPs in 62 countries available
as of the end of April.

The OCN Dial-up Access Service offered 478 domestic access points as of the end
of April, the most of any ISP in Japan. NTT, however, began receiving increased
requests from customers who wanted to connect to the Internet while traveling
overseas by simply calling, without advance application, a local ISP. The new
service will respond to this need.
UnitFee
Per minute of connection time¥30
3. Additional E-mail Addresses for OCN Dial-up Access Service With the widening popularity of e-mail among small offices and homes, the demand has risen for OCN Dial-up Access Service accounts offering multiple e-mail addresses. In response, NTT plans to offer a maximum four addresses for Dial-up Access Service accounts.
Fee
Per extra e-mail address (2-4)¥250
