Asia Multimedia Forum Holds Plenary Meeting
The plenary meeting of the Asian Multimedia Forum (AMF) was held today in Manila, the Philippines. The AMF was founded in June 1997. Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) is a founding member and Jun-ichiro Miyazu, president of NTT, is its current president. At the meeting, reports were offered on the recent results and future plans for international multimedia usage trials, which are the main activities of the AMF. Such trials include international asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) interconnection trials (conducted from September 1997), satellite infrastructure verification trials (conducted from April 1998), and application development/utilization trials planned for the second quarter of this fiscal year (please see attachment 1 for an outline of each trial). The number of AMF members increased from 30 as of September 1997 to its current 40 members. The 40 companies include telecommunications carriers, manufacturers and trading companies mainly in the Asia-Pacific region (please see attachment 2 for a list of member organizations). At this plenary meeting, a new president of the AMF was elected. Linus Cheung, the Chief Executive Officer of Hong Kong Telecommunications Limited, will serve a one year term. NTT will continue to actively promote the activities of the AMF as its administrative office.
