Biography
Masao Kawachi was the Executive Director of NTT Science and Core Technology Laboratory Group in Atsugi from July.2003 to June. 2005. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D degrees in physical electronics from Tokyo Institute of Technology, in 1971, 1973, and 1978, respectively. In 1973, he joined NTT Ibaraki Electrical Communications Laboratories, where he devoted his younger days mainly to the development of silica-based optical fibers and planar lightwave circuits (PLCs) for optical communications. These PLCs include integrated optical splitters, arrayed-waveguide gratings, thermo-optic switches, and hybrid-integrated opto-electronic transceivers for FTTH. In 1999, he was appointed a Director of NTT Network Innovation Laboratories in Yokosuka, with responsibility for R&D into the next-generation networks including photonic networks. In July 2003, he was promoted to his current position at Atsugi.
Dr. Kawachi is a Fellow of IEEE and is now serving as the Chair of LEOS, Japan Chapter. He is also on the board of Directors of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers of Japan.
