Biography

I am currently an NTT R&D Fellow. During 1991-2003, I was the Executive Director of NTT Science and Core Technology Laboratory Group from July 2000,and the Director of two NTT Laboratories (NTT Basic Research Laboratories since 1997 and NTT Communication Science Laboratories since 1998). From 1986 through 1997, I worked for ATR since its establishment, where I was the President of the ATR Human Information Processing Research Laboratories (ATR HIPRL) since 1992 and the Head of the Hearing and Speech Perception Department, ATR Auditory & Visual Perception Research Laboratories and directed hearing and speech perception and production research from 1986 to 1992. From 1972 through 1986, I worked at the Electrical Communication Laboratories, NTT, where I was engaged in speech signal processing and speech perception research. During 1984-1985, I was an invited researcher at the Speech Research Department, AT&T Bell Laboratories, working on speech recognition.
I received the B. E., M. E., and Dr. Eng. degrees in mathematical engineering and instrumentation physics from the University of Tokyo, Japan, in 1970, 1972, and 1980.
