At Crypto 2020, an international conference on cryptologic research held from August 17 to 21, 2020, the following two researchers received the Best Paper Award for their respective papers.
Dr. Yosuke Todo, a senior researcher of Secure Platform Laboratories, Service Innovation Laboratory Group, NTT (Currently, he is a visiting researcher of Ruhr University Bochum (Supervisor: Prof. Gregor Leander))
Dr. Brent Waters, a distinguished scientist of Cryptography&Information Security Laboratories(CIS LAB), NTT Research
Crypto is the highest international conference in the field of cryptologic research, and in Crypto 2020, the best three papers were selected among the 85 accepted papers (acceptance rate 85/371=22.9%).
Dr. Todo et al.'s paper, "Improved Differential-Linear Attacks with Applications to ARX Ciphers," presents a developed theory of cryptanalysis called differential linear attack, and evaluates the security of ARX-type cipher, which has excellent performance in software environment. The cryptanalysis method presented in this paper plays an important role as security criteria in cryptographic designs that will be studied all over the world.
Note that, this is a joint study with Prof. Gregor Leander and Dr. Christof Beierle of Ruhr University Bochum (RUB), where Dr. Todo is a visiting researcher.
Dr. Waters et al.'s paper, "Chosen Ciphertext Security from Injective Trapdoor Function" proposes an epoch-making construction method to meet Chosen Ciphertext Attack (CCA) security, which is an important security requirement of public key cryptosystems. Unlike the conventional design that satisfies CCA security, the proposed method does not require any trapdoor function with a special property, so that we can design more efficient public key cryptosystems.
NTT Secure Platform Laboratories and NTT Research CIS LAB will continue to contribute to the realization of secure and trust services through research and development of cryptographic technologies.
